Having had six weeks or so on the side lines with calf problems following the Northern Cross Country Championships at the end of January. I had managed to get four reasonable weeks of training in, so the Sand Dancer 10km at South Shields seemed to be the perfect opportunity to see what my real state of fitness was.
Not knowing how I was going to go, I started off steady with the aim of working my way through the field if at all possible. On the second of the laps around The Links I had managed to catch cub mate Luke Aston and could See Steve Marshall of Durham, not too far ahead. Although my aim was then to catch, Steve still had a good gap we hit the finish at Gypsy Green Stadium.

The race also incorporated the VAANEE Multi-Terrain Championships and although I finished 3rd M50 overall (Paul Roper of Sunderland Strollers being first M50) I was actually first M50 in the championships.
It’s a pity not more of the regions ‘Veteran Runners’ are members of VAANEE as they provide another, good platform of competition
However, all in all not a bad return to racing.
