North Shields Poly Clive Cookson 10K - 23rd MayNorth Shields Poly hosted the annual Clive Cookson 10K on a scorching day on North Tyneside with Morpeth Harriers providing the two victors in Ian Harding and Jane Hodgson.
On what is already quite a hard course, where runners had to weave through residential streets then hit off road tracks in the first mile or so, the high temperatures added to the toughness and good pace judgement was going to play a big factor. Ian Harding, one of the North East running scene's more colourful characters, took an early lead in the race and was never headed. He admitted to have been suffering from a few niggles and didn't feel 100% but once he found himself at the head of affairs soon after the gun, he decided to push on and test himself. His winning time of 32.49 was well short of his PB but he was pleased with his night's work and goes into the Blyadon Race full of optimism. His winning margin was 36 seconds at the line ahead of clubmate Neil Wilkisnon who had the distinction of winning the veterans category. Globe trotting Tony Carter of Tyne Bridge Harriers equaled his PB of 33.55 to finish in the 3rd. Carter also had the honour of leading Tyne Bridge to the team award ahead of Morpeth and Wallsend. In the ladies event it was Jane Hodgson, competing in her first race since Good Friday, that took top honours in a time of 37.03. Second place went to the in form Stacey Rogers of Wallsend in 37.58. North Shields Poly, despite having many members out marshalling, were still able to field a team good enough to win the team award, ahead of Tyne Bridge and Wallsend. Overall, a good night. The event was ran efficiently and in the friendly manner that you expect from a North East road race. A huge thanks must go to everyone at North Shields Poly, from marshalls to organisers to cake makers! Well done to everyone that took part. Full results can be found by clicking here. Photo's from the night are below, North East Runner would like to thank Heaton Harriers' George Routledge for these great pictures.
