Fiona from Gosforth enjoys the trip out to Blaydon to run along the Derwent Walk, part of the Coast to Coast route. Read on to see why she enjoys it so much.
My favourtite route is one of those out-and-back routes. I know, I know, it doesn't seem very exciting but honestly, it is!
Late last year my friend and I parked up at Blaydon Rugby Club and set off....
The run is basically along a country path but its wide, there is easily enough room for a group of runners to run along comfortably. There are a couple of main roads that you have to cross along the way but that's to be expected, the scenery more than makes up for that. It's certainly not a boring run along a straight path - it's undulating, it bends, its turns, there are loads of things to look at as you jog along.
With it being an out and back course you can turn around whenever you like and head back at any time. The best part for me is the fact that it's ever so slightly uphill on the way out which obviously means that on the way back, when you may be a little tired, you can relax and enjoy the downhill.

Another great thing about the run is that it's so sociable. Yes, there are dogs out for a walk but more often or not, when the owners see a runner coming towards them, they get control of them as you pass with a friendly 'good morning'. There are also lots of runners of different speeds, I always remember watching someone win a cross country race on a Saturday then he passed me the day after. I was quite star struck!
The final point I wanted to make was that is it so so quiet. I know that runners say that running is a good way to unwind but this is certainly the case along the Derwent Walk, it's peaceful and it's great, I would recommend it to anyone and hope to see more people there in the summer months!
