After the Newcastle Parkrun was called off we took a trip to the third running of the Whitley Bay Parkrun. Brian Hetherington set new record figures after a hard fought battle at the third Whitley Bay Parkrun.
The Wallsend Harrier was quickly to the fore after a manic start and was tracked by Tynedale Harriers' Alan Copeland before Hetherington's strength began to show as he came home 26 seconds clear. Claremont Road Runners hosted the popular Weetslade Relays around Thockley Park with Elswick Harriers coming out on top in the 3 x 2.5 mile event. Each team must consist of a female runner and a male veteran runner, something that makes the race unqiue, exciting and tests teams strength in depth. Elswick Harriers hosted their annual Newburn River Run on Wednesday and it was another night of success for Morpeth Harriers as they provided winners in both men's and women's races. Prolific racer Ian Harding, despite suffering from hayfaver and feeling tired after recent exertions, took the lead shortly after the start and was never headed in a field that had 328 finishers. Whitley Bay is the latest location in the ever expanding Parkrun series and with a huge turnout and a challenging but enjoyable course, it looks as though this venue will be one of the most popular in the region. North Tyneside Mayor Linda Arkley was even there to enjoy the inaugural event as victory went to Tyne Bridge Harriers' Tony Carter in 17.07. Local 'lad' Brian Rushworth won the annual Penshaw Hill Race, hosted by Sunderland Harriers, narrowly beating Morpeth's Nick Swinburn while it was a double celebration for Sunderland as Michelle Holt won the ladies race. The tough 3 mile off road course started at the bottom of Penshaw Hill and wound it's way up to the top before heading back down to do a couple of loops before a steep climb to the top again (see picture left). Saturday 9th June saw the 32nd running of the Blaydon Race. The famous race started at the bottom of Newcastle's Bigg Market and is steeped in Geordie tradition. This year's race has added significance as it celebrated the 150th anniversary of the event that the famous song was written about: ''Aw went to Blaydon Races, 'twas on the ninth of Joon,
Eiteen hundred an' sixty-two, on a summer's efternoon; Aw tyuk the 'bus frae Balmbra's, an' she wis heavy laden, Away we went alang Collingwood Street, that's on the road to Blaydon" |
