It was another successful day for Morpeth Harriers as they produced the first two in the Exhibition Park 5k through Nick Swinburn and Matty Nicholson as well as the first lady in Sarah Wilkinson. The popular event, organised by Newcastle City Council with the assistance of Elswick Harriers, starts inside Newcastle's Exhibition Park before heading out around the Town Moor with a loop inside the Park to finish. Winner Lewis Timmins This year's Sunderland 5k incorporated the North Eastern 5k Championships with the new champions being Morpeth's Lewis Timmins and Wallsend's Danielle Hodgkinson. Both scored narrow but exciting victories around the fast Silksworth course although a strong wind meant that times were down on last year. Winner Ross Floyd Ross Floyd and Aly Dixon were the winners of the very first Tyne Bridge, Bridges of the Tyne 5 mile Road Race along Newcastle Quayside. It was a narrow victory for Floyd as he held off the challenge of the host club's Steve Cairns, winner of last week's Tynedale 10k, by just 6 seconds to win in a time of 25.55. Dixon's victory was a lot more comfortable, winning by a huge 3 and a half minutes from unattached athlete Louise Rogers. Steve Cairns New Tyne Bridge Harriers recruit Steve Cairns made light work of the heat and humidity at the Tynedale 10k to storm to victory. It was a double celebration for the Northern Irishman as he also led his new clubmates to team victory. Morpeth's Jane Hodgson comfortably won the ladies event, continuing her impressive form in local road races. |
