The popular event, organised by Newcastle City Council with the assistance of Elswick Harriers, starts inside Newcastle's Exhibition Park before heading out around the Town Moor with a loop inside the Park to finish.
By 4k he held a lead of around 15 seconds over Geremew who was starting to struggle and was being closed down by Swinburn's Morpeth clubmate Matty Nicholson. As the finish approached it was the clock that was Swinburn's rival and a big effort took him to victory in 14.54 which was was 10 seconds faster than his Sunderland 5k time.
In attendance was GB International Justina Heslop, who admitted that partner Geremew had been struggling in training and his lack of fitness meant that Nicholson was able to go past him in the final 800m to complete a Morpeth 1-2 in 15.25.
The veterans competition was won by Tyne Bridge's Keith Smith in a time of 16.31, getting the better of team mate Kenny MacPherson by 10 seconds.
The ladies race was easily won by veteran athlete Sarah Wilkinson who led from the gun to win in 17.46. Her margin of victory was more than one minute from the host club's Yam Thiru.
