So what did October look like from a parkrun point of view then?
With the Great North run now a distant memory and the Harrier league kicking off to change the face of Autumn/winter Saturdays we were expecting a bit of a dip in numbers. But turns out actually it was a bit split across our North East.
But its Riverside which is getting the prize for attendance this month, seeing a huge 32% increase in average turnout compared to last, despite being half flooded in early October. Maybe it’s the flatness of the course which is pulling you all over there – it is cross country season afterall, so we’re sure you’re all doing enough hill training right now!
Any more women we hear you ask …?
Actually, yes! We don’t really know why (theories on a postcard please) but yes, more ladies were out there this month – an overall increase of 2% (about 40 a week) … whatever it is it’s great to see.
An age old question …
Well herein maybe lies the answer to the question where are all the women coming from … Maybe the Olympic legacy is working or maybe its extra training for the cross country season but the Junior Girls numbers have seen a massive boost this month compared to last, almost double that seen on average across September and even more in the u20 women with a whopping max of 94 compared to only 18 in September!
For the men it’s steadily ticking over with little show stopping trends and in fact seeing a slight dip from September in most categories (maybe it’s the footie lads getting stuck into soccer am instead?).
News on the newcomers …
Unsurprisingly, given the increase in average attendances, it was Riverside leading the way on the Newcomers front, with the rest of our runs all seeing a dip compared with September.
And on those PBs …
Well it’s the pounders over at Stewart, Tees Barrage and Gateshead again who are seeing the largest in terms of improvements. But again across the board a bit down on September – we’re sure its got something to do with the weather though with the last week in October seeing treacherous conditions over in Newcastle where most runners were 60secs down after having to contend with howling winds and frost.
Riverside again though is one to watch with their max PB week seeing 46% of people improve on previous efforts but of course that was the one where the course had to be diverted due to flooding …. Times have been amended we undertstand but maybe peoples’ kick finshes have been slightly overestimated! The fun of parkrun eh?!
Topping the charts with the lowest times on the 5k …
The young guns were out and meaning serious business with 3 of our top 10 times coming from u15 year old lads! And not forgetting Graham Taylor who’s just breaking his own Gateshead record for fun now … wonder if he’s managed to convince them of a bonus yet?
In terms of age gradings …
Some commendable efforts all round though – remember 90% is World class Standard and anything over 80 is considered National Class.
Lastly then the now formidable roll of honour … did you make it on this month …
