The Wallsend Harrier was quickly to the fore after a manic start and was tracked by Tynedale Harriers' Alan Copeland before Hetherington's strength began to show as he came home 26 seconds clear.
North Shields Poly's Suzanne Thew also rewrote the ladies record with a time of 19.54 which placed her 13th overall. It was Thew's second win after winning the first race.
Overall, another friendly and well organised event. Even the wind and recent bad weather didn't put off the 137 finishers.
