Sunderland City 10k/Marathon of the North
More than 1800 runners toed the line in the second running of the Sunderland City 10K, organised by redspottedhanky.com.
The course, which started and finished at the Stadium of Light was described as 'tough but good' by race winner Yared Hagos, with a couple of sharp ascents and a stiff breeze to challenge the runners.
It was Wallsend's Hagos, keen to support local events after a few races out of the area, who was part of a 3 man group that broke away in the first mile. He was accompanied by Leeds City's Derek Hawkins, who has a PB of 29.47, as well as reigning champion and Morpeth stalwart Ian Hudspith. Soon after though Hagos turned the screw and it was only Hawkins that was able to go with the Tyneside based Ethiopian.
Running strongly, Hagos moved away but was never comfortably ahead as Hawkins hung on, hoping that his rival would tire and he could mount a serious challenge. However, Hagos remained strong, digging into his reserves in the last mile to cross the line in 30.47 with Hawkins finishing 13 seconds behind. Hudspith ran a lone race to finish 3rd in 31.33, just 18 seconds slower than his 2011 winning time. Hudspith had the distinction of being first veteran ahead of Brian Rushworth from Sunderland.
In the ladies race it was Chester le Street's Alyson Dixon, still feeling the effects of her London Marathon exploits where she ran 2.35, that was victorious. Dixon had only ran twice since London but was keen to stretch her legs and support the event. After a cautious first mile she got into her stride, passing eventual second placer Stacey Rogers of Wallsend just before the 3k mark to win in 37.06. Rogers, back in form after injury, ran 38.26 with Sunderland Michelle Holt finishing 3rd in 39.54.
